Close Encounters

Encounters - of any kind - it's not a word we always associate with Opensim. It's a whole lotta space!
If you think that opensim's kind of empty today, then you should have seen it ten, fifteen years ago. The small population of pioneers was pretty sparse, and you'd be forgiven for describing it as a place of rare encounters, maybe even zero!
Close Encounters - the space ship
Yet, for seven years from 2008, there was one fixed appointment on OSGrid where you'd find a regular band of happy dancers, some good tunes, the latest gossip - of a friendly kind, nothing hostile - and the chance to finally see someone after a week of building and experimenting in this brave new world.
The place was Close Encounters, a spaceship dance club on a region that was home to Dorothea Lundquist and Jay Maze.

A Scientific Safari Finale

Our final stop on this final Safari of 2023 was on OSGrid, at the home of Caro Fayray. Caro is a long time resident, and also a volunteer administrator,  of the grid often dubbed 'the crossroads of Opensim'.
Caro Fayray
Each year Caro takes responsibility for organizing, displaying, labelling, and promoting the original content that is donated for OSgrid's Auction - people can buy for real money content that is not available anywhere else in opensim, and the funds they pay go toward the maintenance of the OSGrid servers, which as everyone knows, are entirely funded by volunteer contributions.
On Echo Rock, we took our places in a comfortable meeting area.
Caro Fayray: Hello everyone and welcome to ECHO ROCK - FUN SCIENCE This region has shared environment, take a seat or pose on a column:) Local Chat is simwide to make interaction easier. Feel  free to  explore  if you want. Many are interactive so don't just cam:) In  your  invite you say  'art' thirza... I  never thought  of this as art:)
Alex Salamander: Hello
Tosha Tyran: Hi
Kelso Uxlay: Hello Caro... camming around... Volcano erupting

Osgrid Auction

The OSGrid Auction is coming !
This year, the  grand sales event will be from 25 September - 1st October.
That means, if you're a creator, builder, scripter or texture maker,  now is a good time for you to create something original to contribute to the mix. The items are gathered now, put on an exhibition region where everyone can take a good look, and then auctioned off for real money to support the costs of keeping the Test grid of opensimulator on the rails.
Auction organizer Caro Fayray was on the sky platform on Echo 1. The platform is empty as of now - so - is it too soon for people to begin building, and contributing their creations to the Auction?
Caro Fayray: Not at all,  stuff can  be given anytime:)
Coordinating any big event can be a hassle, but Caro seems to take it all in her stride with unflappable good humor. Is it a complicated job?
Caro Fayray: getting  people  to  commit  and give  me stuff in  advance is a challenge,  I  have to   bug  a  lot, and  I  make over  100  textures  for all  the boards, then the Auction Lots that fit go  here, if  not, I  have  tps  to see the original  item. There is no limit on the size of the items put up for sale. From smallest  jewellery  to a complete oar  is fine:)  but  items  have to be  unique.

Caro in the Clouds

Nico Kaliani: I'm prepared.
I had a lobotomy to reduce my complexity

Nebula, on OSGrid, is a classic art venue that is well-loved all over opensim. All the Caro Fayray regions on the grid are showcases of variety, explosive and expansive beauty, and a great sense of humor, along with a keen delight in the natural world. We met on the beach at Nebula, where towels were laid out around the camp fire, and palm trees doubled as pole dance positions. HG address as always at the end of the post.

Caro Fayray: I'm  so  nervous:)
Jim Bean: Hi Caro :) mmm, laaaag and someone stole all my clothes while I was tping :) heeello happy bunch
James.Atlloud: I'm feeling so nice and toasty near the fire.
Caro Fayray: is that everyone? Hello everyone and welcome to Nebula. I have no idea how the region will perform and am not a techie so maybe take the notecard from the board. Then you can always return if you want in case we all poof. Maybe take the notecard from the board. Then you can always return if you want in case we all poof. I  spend a  lot of time  here :)

Going, Going... Gone

'Gone' is not a word we want to hear - not if you're talking about a grid being gone, especially if the gone grid is OSGrid.

The historic 'Test Grid' of OpenSimulator, OSGrid, just celebrated its 15th anniversary. As tradition demands, in a couple of weeks there will be a Fundraiser Auction to help bring in some money to support the grid.

So here are some fundraiser questions, do you agree with these answers?

Safari Summer... of Arts

Plans change, and sometimes that's a very good thing. This week the plan was to spend just a little time taking a look around the Summer of Arts region on Metropolis, and then move on to a music event.
Apart from the general insanity, and the opportunity to make new friends, the underlying purpose of the Safari is to practice grid jumping, that's why we usually have two three or even four different destinations each week. But due to a last minute cancellation, the 72nd consecutive Safari was all Metropolis all the time. And boy, what a fantastic time it was too!
As usual, the Safari began on Teravus Plaza, OSGrid. Teravus is a residential sim, we occupy the south west corner of it, right next to the waterfall. You will find the Group Joiner poster by the elephant. Every week a new Notecard + LM folder is prepared and you can get your copy from the sign marked LANDMARKS by the main entrance to the Clubhouse. I usually only do it at the last minute when all the panic has subsided. If you belong to the HGSafari group in Metropolis or OSgrid, you should also receive the information via group notices. Events are posted in a community on G+ called Hypergrid Safari, and a  group in Facebook, so find us there, if you use suchthings.
