Victor's Great Gatsby

A great Great Gatsby build is taking shape over on FreeLife grid, and it has all that Long island loveliness that's a perfect match for the hot summer season of inworld exploration.
It's built by grid owner, Victor DeAngelo. Free Life Grid came online approximately seven years ago, but Victor's virtual life journey began at another totally separate world from OpenSim called The Utherverse.
Victor DeAngelo: That was eleven years ago.  It was there that I owned a large modern city where I rented out storefronts to business owners to provide links to their 3D stores.  The social life there was amazing but the graphics, compared to OS, are quite primitive.  It was one of the other builders, with whom I was associated as a provider of completed layouts, who first discovered OS.  She invited me to come and try it.  Of course, I was immediately hooked.  I rented a 3X3 from a grid owner who has since passed away.  After that, I was provided with the same size region by another grid that has since disappeared.  After those two situations, I made up my mind to own my own grid.  I downloaded Fred Beckhusen's "Outworldz" software which enabled me to set up Free Life.
Autonomy is a great advantage in opensim, where the ebb and flow of grids is a constant issue. Sometimes it's just better to do your own thing, and that's become less of a challenge (let's not say 'easier' - it's still quite complex) in recent years, with the technology and the community making opensim more user friendly, if you do your homework.
Victor DeAngelo: Maintaining the Free Life grid has been an ongoing learning experience.  Outworldz's Dream Grid is quite easy to use once you get the hang of it.  Figuring out how to use it, how to set up ports on my modem, and how to use a refurbished computer as a server was a challenge at first.  Fred, the owner of Outworldz, is a tech expert and is always available to help as well as providing timely responses to e-mail questions.  As a result, I have total confidence in the software and how to use it.  Yes, it does take some time to maintain it but well worth the freedom to manage my own grid without any fear of losing all of my work due to losing a region for any reason.
Classic cars and mansions are an essential part of the Great Gatsby build
Victor DeAngelo: Free Life currently has 11 regions listed in opensimworlds.com.  All are large regions with most of them being connected as part of Free Life City.  One of my residents created two of the regions.  The current project, Great Gatsby, is a 6X6 that will represent more than a year of construction.  It is open now for anyone who clicks through the transports on the other regions if they would like to see how the build is going.  It should be available sometime in October.  Only one more region has been planned which will be the final 4X4 addition to the city.  After that, I am simply going to maintain and enjoy the grid.

Victor DeAngelo: Free Life Great Gatsby is a tribute to Scott Fitzgerald's story of love lost during the Roaring Twenties.  Costumes of the period for both men and women are available in the two nearest stores at the entrance.  All of the buildings and houses will be from that period.  Numerous automobiles from that time will also be included with some available for visitors to be able to drive through the sim.  Of course, much of it is my own idea of what the neighborhood of "Egg Town" looked like but all of the main facets from Fitzgerald's story are included.  By the way, almost everything on the sim will be free to copy including the buildings, houses, furniture, clothing, and most of the contents.
The green light shines at East Egg
Victor DeAngelo: I am a great believer in OpenSim being a place where all of us share with each other while enjoying all of the effort that each one puts into the worlds they create.  OS has come a long way even in the several years that I have enjoyed it.  By creating quality content and freely sharing it, we enable everyone to create quality layouts.  We have come a long way from what we now look back as being very simple and primitive content.  Not only that, but I also get to look younger, extremely handsome, and have a killer avatar mesh body.  Isn't virtual life a lot of fun?
