Chute Case

Pack your bags it's time for another Safari trip this time a sort of return journey to the big Airport build by Jason Flux and master scripter Karsten Runningbear. Jason's beautiful and meticulous mesh sets off a series of industrial landscapes with trains, planes, and commercial vehicles. This is a man's world, the ultimate train set with all the advantages of automation and no bits left lying on the floor to step on in the night. I love it.
Karsten Runningbear and Jason Flux
Jason and his wife Finja Flux are of course famous for their sci-fi build Fluxantis, a jewel of original hand-blendered meshwork. Karsten - well, for my money he's king of the transport scripts. The whole sim zings with life, movement, industry, and the charm of interlocking movement.
There were loads of us this week, but arriving on Pangea the lag was minimal.
We have visited the Air Race before, but on a different region, with much less infrastructure. This time we were on a region called Pangea A023, so if you go exploring or following in our footsteps, make sure you're in the right place! The HG Address is of course at the end of the post.
Cherry (in the white shirt) asks for scripting tips
Jason Flux -> en: Hello everyone
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Welcome to our Sim! Jason and I are building it and we have some news for you. Some of you may already be familiar with The Sim; we've added a few new things.  First we'll take a look at the railway. Then we'll go skydiving. Please click on the "Viewing Platform" sign.
Dings Digital: I like the busy port and industrial area
We arrived at the same time as most of our textures - makes a change!
Naomi Volturi: nice view
Karsten Runningbear -> en: It is an airport and port.
Thirza Ember: did you take your inspiration from a real world airport?
Karsten Runningbear -> en: No, Thirza, just the name. It's Germany's first airport.
In fact Germany's first airstrip was established in 1908 on the recommendation of mathematician August Euler - best known in Opensim for tormenting Scripters with his rotations long after his death - but also the first person in Germany to get a pilot's license.
Jade Serenity: Coop you have the right clothes on to race!
Cooper Swizzle: Thanks Jade
Forest Azure: /me looks at james' crocs .. those are not yellow :)
James Atlloud: I lessened the impact of the yellow
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Please look in the direction I am looking.  Do you see the railway crossing?
Alex.Salamander: yes
Dings Digital: ah down from here, I see it
Karsten Runningbear -> en: There are two cars in front of the barriers. I'll start the train now. He is coming from the direction of the ship.
Forest Azure: but the car drivers are looking on their phones, no doubt!
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Pay attention to the barriers.
Jade Serenity: wow i just upped my draw distance !  I love these cargo ships,  I love the use of so many types of vehicles
Thirza Ember: the trains are fun! so much is happening here
Lavia LLavine: Yes it's quite active.
Karsten Runningbear -> en: There is also a passenger train.
Dings Digital: But hopefully it's not Deutsche Bahn
Thirza Ember: Karsten, what caused you to have a passion for vehicle scripts?
Karsten Runningbear -> en: That was a long time ago, Thirza, it was already like that in SL We built small boats back then, up to 32 prims.
Thirza Ember: Did you know Jason back in SL?
Karsten Runningbear -> en: No, I've only known Jason since Pangea. He is a brilliant mesher. Nothing here is from SL
Koshari Mahana: I can see! Bravo Jason
Dings Digital: Impressive
Jason Flux -> en: All parts come from the internet or are self-made.
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Okay, on to the next station, first back to the landing point. click the sign
Thirza Ember: we love to click!
Lavia LLavine: And sit on things... And ride things... And click some more.
Karsten Runningbear -> en: This is where the trains are loaded.
Thirza Ember: mmm you can smell the diesel
Dings Digital: Diesel is a luxury at the moment :-)
Karsten Runningbear -> en: The trains are not physical vehicles that drive using KeyFramed Motion.  Locomotives and wagons are individual link sets. They interact with the signals and the loading crane.
Thirza Ember: considering how many scripted things you have here, there is no lag at all
Cherry Manga: and the region size?
Karsten Runningbear -> en: and it's a 6x6 SSIM
Jason Flux -> en: Yes, that's brilliant!
Spax Orion: he optimized everything well...
Lavia LLavine: Oh very nice size
Koshari Mahana: they must be great scripts
Jade Serenity: yes! the TP are very fast
Cherry Manga: very clever scripting
Tina Bey: The whole region looks so full of life!
Thirza Ember: a region like this could be used for training in an industrial course: "how to avoid getting killed in a container port"
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Everything runs automatically; scripting that took a lot of patience.
Thirza Ember: and all this industry is going on while people are racing in the sky?
Dings Digital: I don't think I've ever seen such an orchestrated simulation in Opensim
Jade.Serenity: very realistic!
Cherry Manga: It's fascinating as I have no idea how the scripts are made and with which logic!
Spax Orion: Karsten is there one framework controlling all of this or are the vehicles scripted individually?
Karsten Runningbear -> en: No Spax, each unit operates independently and communicates with the others. For example, the train approaches the signal. It requests permission to enter and waits until the signal gives the OK.
Thirza Ember: I like the red forklift truck because it skids around the bends, and that is exactly how I drive in RL
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Thirza is still using the old script. With that one, keyframed motion doesn't make short movements, but always linear.

Alex Salamander: I'm just amazed at how smoothly everything is going here :-)
Koshari Mahana:  love how the bulldozer is digging the dirt for the pipeline. Jason, you are very talented with mesh.
Karsten Runningbear -> en: We spent weeks tinkering with the railway until it stayed on the tracks in the curve.
Cooper Swizzle: This build is just awesome, I know it took time and patience to put this all together and it shows it from all the comments.  Congrats
Karsten Runningbear -> en: We had to make all the tracks ourselves because the curve radius of the tracks available in opensim was too small.
Spax Orion: How long have you been building this Karsten? sorry if you answered that before.
Karsten Runningbear -> en: I don't know, but a few months, and that's just the railway
Thirza Ember: will you have another Air Race competition this year?
Karsten Runningbear -> en: We're still thinking about it, but I don't think so, because most people say the planes are too difficult to fly.
Thirza Ember: oh you should do it! now more of us are aware of the competition, we can train!
James Atlloud: I've dreamed of a home with a view of a seaport and sip coffee watching the wheels of industry turn
Thirza Ember: so you had to build these pieces of track for your train system so the curve was not so tight
Spax Orion: Long before we had computers, we built small towns in our basements and train stations.
James Atlloud: oh yes
Cooper Swizzle: Spax, I remember those days
Lavia LLavine: I remember the train that Gomez Adams had
James Atlloud: can these trains crash like Gomez' trains?
Luckily there was no crashing at all and after looking at the container port (the machinery works and loads and unloads containers from the trains in a mesmerizing sequence) we moved on to the skydiving section of our visit. Parachuting  was the name of the game. Three passengers, wearing chutes that are available from the nearby shack, sit in the rear of the plane by the open door and when the height is right, they launch themselves out into the blue.
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Here comes the plane! Step aside a little :)
Thirza Ember: I'm standing out of the danger zone
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Let me explain briefly: the plane takes off, the pilot announces "Altitude reached," and you stand up. The parachute opens automatically; you can control it with the arrow keys.
Dings Digital: Does the pilot only say it in German?
Karsten Runningbear -> en: The next flight will be flown by Jason; you'll need parachutes for that, Koshari Mahana: Is the item called "fallschirm" the parachute?
Lavia LLavine: Oh no, the plane is eating Koshari.
Dings Digital: I have an Alpha Layer for wound care
Spax Orion: a few safari battle scars are good for the soul
Karsten Runningbear -> en: You can get in with Jason, but please put on your parachute first.
Spax Orion: Is the parachute OPTIONAL?
Forest Azure: oh wait ... attach something? nooooo!
Karin Becker: that was cool
Naomi Volturi: was great
Miguel Torres: we see us in the sky
Karsten Runningbear -> en: If you have the parachute activated, you can simply fly upwards. If you're already loaded, he's gone.
Spax Orion: watching the plane now as it meanders around up there...
Koshari Mahana: As soon as  landed I got run over by a plane lol
Thirza Ember: I'm not going to fly, but I will just wear the parachute in case I fall
Karsten Runningbear -> en: You can use the parachutes anywhere.
Intrepid passengers Petlove, James and Lavia
Cosa Wiefel: great landing
Karin Becker: is totally fun
Koshari Mahana: The parachutes are great fun! Thank you for the experience.
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Here we have the weather maps, which update automatically.
James Atlloud: I'll come back to watch the trains
Forest Azure: but but .. can we jump out of a plane?
Petlove Petshop: I'd come back sure!
Spax Orion: Thank you Karsten for the tour. I am inspired.
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Forest, no matter where you fall, the parachute opens.
Thirza Ember: Karsten, and Jason, please reconsider - and have another Air Race. it would be so much fun.
Jason Flux -> en: Yes Thirza, we are thinking about it.
Miguel Torres: super
Dings Digital: Totally impressive, the details, the technology, the fun. great class!
Jason Flux -> en: Thank you for your visit.
James Atlloud: This is awesome Karsten! Thank you!
Lunard Gibson: great work here
Karin Becker: It was really nice here, thank you
Cherry Manga: thank you, it's incredible work done here
Karsten Runningbear -> en: Have fun on the next tour!
